The overall design of Grant Daycare, located in Port Coquitlam, is indebted to and reflective of its surroundings. Through its playful reinterpretation of the local vernacular massing, roofline and materiality, the building signals its programmatic difference (daycare vs single-family home) while respecting the character and identity of the surrounding context. Typical elements of the residential neighbourhood - footprint shape and size, pitched roof, articulated facades, standard window sizes, and a muted colour palette with wood highlights are re-purposed to create a new building that is fully integrated into the existing community.
YPK Airport is a regional airport in Pitt Meadows, located within a 60-km radius from YVR International Airport. Serving as an extension to the YPK Regional Airport, the new hangar complex is designed to meet emerging demands by the aircraft servicing industry seeking to expand beyond Richmond, BC. The scope is limited to facade design of five new aircraft hangars, covering an area of over 200,000 sqft. The hangars are pre-fabricated, meaning the only adjustable variable is surface treatment and lighting. Referencing movie sets and historic commercial lots, the design proposes cladding each hangar in coloured panels to create a seamless gradient between ground and sky. In addition to providing the clients with a captivating narrative, the concept is useful for wayfinding. Further, the facade design becomes a framework and easily replicable motif that allows for customization and future expansion.
The site is located in Gibsons, BC, a former fishing town located 50 km Northwest of Vancouver. Despite technically being on mainland British Columbia, Gibsons is only accessible via ferry. Gibsons is built at the base of Mount Elphinstone - an 1,100m peak that overlooks Howe Sound and Keats island - and as such, has significant grade change between the historic town centre/ferry terminal (Lower Gibsons) and the new commercial centre (Upper Gibsons).
