Alpine Context. Intergenerational Living.Located in the foothills of Cranbrook, BC, this 4-storey mixed-use development navigates the complexities of a steep, wildfire-prone site to create a cohesive community hub. The design rationale is grounded in the local topography: the building's massing features angular planes and tapered forms that mimic the ascending profiles of the surrounding Kootenay Ranges.
To ground the structure within its forested context, we applied a rigorous material strategy. The façade features a vertical colour gradient—transitioning from a heavy, dark stone base to lighter, wood-grain fiber cement at the peaks—reflecting the natural vegetation zones of the region. Beyond the form, the program unlocks social potential by co-locating 66 units of senior-oriented housing with a 515 m² childcare facility, fostering intergenerational connection.
